Programme Objective

How many of you are aware of the various tax rules applicable to creating, acquiring or developing intellectual property (IP)?  How many of you realise that implementing sound IP and R&D strategies might potentially help your company achieving lower effective tax rate? 

In this module, participants will have the opportunity to explore the key considerations when formulating tax strategies in IP management and R&D activities so that they are able to apply sound tax principles to maximise tax saving for their organisations. The use of practical case studies and interactive discussions between the workshop facilitator and the participants would form a major component in this workshop to ensure that the discussion and key learning points remain practical and relevant.

Programme Outline

  • Recognise different stages of a IP lifecycle and evaluate the Singapore income tax implications arising from each of these stages
  • Review the Singapore IP regime, enabling you to appreciate the various types of protectable IP in Singapore
  • Examine specific Singapore income tax issues for companies undertaking R&D activities, acquiring IP rights from another party, and entering into cost-sharing arrangements with related parties
  • Analyse using case study approach how foreign investors incorporate their IP tax planning strategies as part of their negotiation of tax incentives with the relevant Government agencies
  • Discuss the latest transfer pricing development as to how it might create a significant impact on your next IP acquisition.

1] NTUC Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)
UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme) is an individual skills upgrading account for NTUC members. NTUC member gets to enjoy UTAP funding 50% of the unfunded course fee capped at $250 every year. This excludes miscellaneous fees such as GST and registration fee etc.
 
This course is approved for UTAP support for intakes conducted between 01 April 2019 – 31 March 2020.
 
As UTAP is given on calendar year basis, and calculated based on year of training taken, it cannot be accumulated.

  • Maintained paid-up NTUC membership before course, throughout course duration and at the point of claim and;
  • Course by training provider must be supported under UTAP and training must commence within the supported period and;
  • Unfunded course fee must not be fully sponsored by company or other types of funding
  • Unfunded course fee must be S$20.00 and above, and;
  • Member must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance for each application and sat for all prescribed examination(s), if any and;
  • UTAP application must be made within 6 months after course ends.
