Programme Objective
 
This course is an introduction to Python, a popular programming language, which will be delivered in a context relevant to professional accountants. Python is a user -friendly language taught as an introductory Computer Science courses in the universities, while also being powerful and flexible enough to be used in a variety of professional settings, e.g. in data science, artificial intelligence and web development.
 
Participants will learn how Python can be used to consolidate data from reports of varying templates, crawling data from e-commerce sites to evaluate the organisation’s pricing strategies, and making documents in the workplace secure from prying eyes.
 

Programme Outline


This introductory course will be conducted in one day, based on the following outline:
 

TopicsProjects (incl. optional challenges)
  • Getting started with Jupyter
  • Python basics: Variables, Loops, Conditionals and Data Types
  • Python vs Visual Basic: How knowing one makes it easy to pick up another.
  • Using Jupyter to generate simple graphs from data sets provided.
  • Presenting data with Jupyter.
  • Replicating popular VB macros in Python.
  • Writing web crawlers
  • Compile tweets from a particular Twitter account.
  • Compiling real time e-commerce site prices into a spreadsheet.
  • Security at the workspace
  • Cracking a password protected spreadsheet or zip file.
 
Training Methodology

A hands-on and highly participative learning course conducted in a computer lab. Participants will be given opportunities to perform simple coding using Python and create simple charts from data sets.

1 week before programme or until full enrolment
 

Intended For

Accounting professionals who wish to learn the beginner-friendly language Python and apply them to their work. Any participants who wish to gain introductory knowledge on Python.

After finishing their public service stints as education officers with MOE, Akmal and Yinjie have harnessed their passion for creating and learning with technology to create a start-up which provides coding training to schools, tertiary institutions, startups, and corporations such as DBS, EDB, Sephora, and Temasek Holdings. In the last 6 years, working closely with the Infocomm Media Development Authority, Akmal, Yinjie and their colleagues have trained thousands of students and executives in various programming languages and platforms such as Python for data science, iPhone app development, web development, and electronics prototyping in Arduino and microbit. They've also worked to create apps (search for IC Photo on the iOS App Store if you're renewing your passport), and one of their web apps, Helpling, was acquired by technology conglomerate Rocket Internet.
 
They create web and mobile apps for proprietary use, and provide software consultancy services.
 
  • Corporate clients include Temasek Holdings, Sephora Ltd, DBS, EDB, MOE, NTUC, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, ITE Central, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University
  • IMDA appointed vendor for the ICM Learning Roadmap for schools, teaching web development, mobile development, the maker movement, and networking security for over 40 schools.
  • Pilot vendor for the Code@SG Movement, bringing programming literacy to schools as part of core curriculum to over 3,000 students.
  • Pilot industry partner for the Digital Maker programme, developing a custom breakout board and mobile application for the launch of the micro:bit in Singapore
  • Pilot and appointed vendor for the PlayMaker programme, introducing age-appropriate technology toys to over 160 preschools to foster creativity and learning through play.
  • Conducted Courses for Singapore Design Week, NTUC Learning Hub’s Future Creator series, Maker Faire Singapore, Infocomm Media Youth Festival, Camp Asia, IMDA Tech Saturday.
