Programme Objective
 
We live in a multi-cultural society and communicate with people of different nationalities and ethnicities daily. At times unintentional miscommunication, conflict and awkward situations happen even in the workplace. This course will help you to understand different people’s communication styles and differences which lead to conflicts and how you can resolve these conflicts in an effective manner.
 
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop the ability to structure information in a clear and logical manner.
  • Acquire the ability to present differing points of view in non-confrontational ways.
  • Understand and practice the skill of questioning positively and listening actively.
  • Appreciate that interpreting communication with accuracy is based on understanding where are you coming from.

Programme Outline

 

  • The First Steps in Managing Diversity
    • Assessing one's own beliefs about work values.
    • Mono and Poly chronic cultures.
    • Low context and High context cultures.
    • Norms, values and basic assumptions.
    • Empathy versus ethnocentrism.
    • Identifying work values of others from different cultural backgrounds.
    • Examining assumptions from a multicultural perspective
  • Understanding Yourself and Your Communication Style
    • Individual personality profiles using the DISC model.
    • The different types of communication styles.
    • How to adapt communication styles to suit different people and cultures.
  • Communication Barriers
    • The organisation of message such as the channel and feedback.
    • Causes and possible solutions for barriers.
  • Communication Tips
    • Using the right tone with I-Messages.
    • Different communication approaches.
    • Using different open-ended questioning techniques.

Training Methodology
 
The approach to delivering the workshop is hands-on and skill-based throughout. The learning environment is highly interactive between the workshop leader and participants, and among the participants themselves. Peer learning from sharing experiences will be strongly encouraged. Learning methods include facilitator’s short input, group exercises and feedback, self-assessments, brainstorming, role plays and case studies related to real life applications.

1] NTUC Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)
UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme) is an individual skills upgrading account for NTUC members.

NTUC members enjoy 50% *unfunded course fee support for up to $250 each year when you sign up for courses supported under UTAP. NTUC members aged 40 and above can enjoy higher funding support up to $500 per individual each year, capped at 50% of unfunded course fees, for courses attended between 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2022. *This excludes miscellaneous fees such as GST and registration fee etc.

As UTAP is given on calendar year basis, and calculated based on year of training taken, it cannot be accumulated.

  • Maintained paid-up NTUC membership before course, throughout course duration and at the point of claim and;
  • Course by training provider must be supported under UTAP and training must commence within the supported period and;
  • Unfunded course fee must not be fully sponsored by company or other types of funding
  • Unfunded course fee must be S$20.00 and above, and;
  • Member must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance for each application and sat for all prescribed examination(s), if any and;
  • UTAP application must be made within 6 months after course ends.
