14.00 CPE Hours (Category 1, Category 2, Category 3, Category 4Category 5, Others)
Classroom

Important Note:
As this class places strong emphasis on the hands-on experience, you will be working with data for the majority of the time in the class. To optimize the learning experience, it is mandatory for all participants to bring a laptop and install the software needed for the class beforehand.

Participants will be using two software in this course: PHStat and Tableau Public (Windows and Mac). Detailed instructions on the installation will be sent to your registered email after your attendance has been confirmed. Please make sure that you install and activate the software only 3 days before the class as the trial period is only valid for two weeks. If you face difficulties in installing the software, please contact the instructor.

Our role working in today's technology-led organization is strategic. It requires us to be a data analyst, a catalyst for change and a technology adopter. We now have to play a major role in strategy development and overall business success. Underpinning all of this is the effective application of technology that enables us to depict our message clearly via business analytics and visual intelligence.

This program aims to provide an introductory 101 understanding on how scientific use of data analysis and data visualization could lead to improved decision making and problem solving.

Effective decisions can be derived based on data analysis to provide opportunities for innovative business models, streamlining of cost and performance management. In turn, user-friendly visualization tools and techniques can help management focus on their most important key performance indicators (KPIs).

Programme Objective
In this course we will facilitate participants to:

  • Establish a clear vision of their desired business impact that is necessary to shape the integrated approach to source relevant data for model building and decision making.
  • Explore the benefits of data analytics, through use of some basic operational examples of predictive model building.
  • Develop an understanding of analytics as a form of business intelligence that facilitates prediction of how people — e.g. individuals will act or respond under different dynamic conditions.
  • Examine through use of a case study to define and optimize strategies to attract, recruit, engage and retain candidates with desirable leadership behaviors.
  • Experience the process of turning 360° feedback survey forms into people analytics
  • Enhance understanding on performance management analytics using descriptive, predictive and prescriptive modelling to define the characteristics of desirable behavior

Programme Outline

Method – Using Business Analytics
Day 1

1. Using case studies, we will turn datasets into business insights using fundamental statistical analysis with the following steps:
Data Dimension

  • Identify key strategic business goals.
  • Reverse engineer business goals identified by transforming them into key performance indicators needed to track the progress of attaining such strategic goals.

Data Collection

  • Structure data dimensions in preparation for data collection.
  • Craft survey questions to collect relevant qualitative data for analysis
  • Transform and integrate data into business insights for impactful decision making by applying basis descriptive statistics to business problems; in the flowing manner:

Data Preparation

  • Form and test hypotheses for informed decision making
  • Understanding trends, detecting outliers
  • Differentiate between categorical and continuous data.

Descriptive Analytics

  • Associating relationships between data variables with correlation and t tests for the mean
  • Perform simple ANOVA analysis using Excel PHStat and interpret the output

2. Day 1 assessment and Recap of learnings on the use of tools

Method – Using Data Visualization
Day 2

3. Conduct of Diagnosis and Prescriptive Analytics

  • Introduction to concept of confidence intervals, p values and normal distribution
  • Derive accurate results with confidence intervals
  • Perform simple regression analysis using Excel and interpret the output

4.  Story Board
Convert analytics into storyboard with data visualization through use of Tableau business analytics software to perform the following functions:

  • Story board insights into a dashboard presentation.
  • Facilitate quick understanding of what’s happening in the data by visualizing where issues lie and addressing it with the following steps:
  • Build charts and dashboards to translate complex information into simple to understand knowledge.
  • Use of Tableau dashboards as a performance monitoring tool to facilitate reallocation of resources to optimize business impact.
  • Enable forecasting of trends.
  • Gain insights to magnitude of data dimension.
  • Creation of geographical heat maps.
  • Create impact by Interplaying with box plots, size, color and data filters.

5. Day 2 assessment and Recap of learnings on the use of tools

This course covers an Assessment element.

Training Methodology
Lecture style, HBR data analytics simulation and computer hands-on Exercises using PHStat and Tableau.

Closing Date for Registration
1 week before programme or untill full enrolment.

Intended For

Executives and managers who are interested in being introduced to the foundational concept of data analytics to make decisions scientifically rather than just judgmentally.
