This course will be conducted via Live Webinar in Jun 2021.
This course is formerly known as DGT029 : A hands-on introduction to Data Analytics for Accountants and Analysts.
Important Note:
As this class places strong emphasis on the hands-on experience, you will be working with data for the majority of the time in the class. To optimize the learning experience, it is mandatory for all participants to bring a Windows laptop and install the software needed for the class beforehand.
Participants will be using two software in this course: Alteryx (Windows Only) and Tableau Public (Windows and Mac). Detailed instructions on the installation will be sent to your registered email after your attendance has been confirmed. Please make sure that you install and activate the software only 3 days before the class as the trial period is only valid for two weeks. If you face difficulties in installing the software, please contact the instructor.
Programme Objective
As the world move towards a digital economy, the ability to turn information into insights is not only crucial to support the development of a data-driven organisation; but also, critical to maintain the relevance for accountants.
Data Analytics (DA) is a process that involves multiple stages needed to turn data into insights. While data analytics does involve technologies, a successful DA project requires far more considerations than that.
In this two days introductory course, participants will see and learn how to perform an analytics project from the beginning to the end.
In this course, participants will:
- Describe the steps involved in a typical data analytics project, and the considerations needed to make it successful in providing insights
- Obtain an understanding on data structure and the tools used to extract or collect data
- Design and perform data analyses to provide insights
- Develop visualisation to enhance the understanding and presentation of insights obtained through data analytics procedures
Programme Outline
This course will cover the following skills needed to implement data analytics at work:
- Project planning
- Data extraction
- Data analyses
- Data visualisation
This course has structured and integrated the learning points above into the following thematic areas:
- Sales return analyses
- Revenue forecasting
- Credit evaluation
- Detection of fraudulent transaction via supervised machine learning
This course focuses on building foundational knowledge so that each participant will gain an appreciation of the entire data analytics process and the capabilities/limitations of data analytics.
Within each module, participants will be exposed to useful technical skills that will help participants widen their horizon and understanding of the new digital economy and workplace.
It will also enhance the effectiveness of communication between the participants and the IT/analytics team when collaborating on larger scale analytics projects.
Training Methodology
This course adopts a hands-on approach towards learning data analytics.
As this is an introductory course, foundational topics will be covered to ensure that all participants are able to understand the content covered in the hands-on session and case study.
The course is made up of three main components:
1. Introduction
2. Hands-on session
3. Case study
Participants are expected to participate in the group/course discussion and presentation. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a windows laptop along for in-class activities.
