Programme Objective

Whenever there are discussions about auditing, it may revolve around the financial status of companies such as Sunbeam Products, Waste Management,  and the Baptist Foundation of Arizona, Fannie Mae, WorldCom, Pan Electric as well as the infamous Enron case, among others.

This course will facilitate our thought process in the performance of our professional responsibilities, be it risk management, financial management, internal or external audits. It will also enable us to get a better understanding of the corporate failures that happened round the globe.  It will provide a background understanding as to why there are so many changes in the financial reporting standards, and the clarity projects in the re-writing of all the auditing standards. It also enable us to appreciate why the regulatory authorities worldwide are implementing more interactive programmes to ensure that every one responsible for the financial reporting of public interested enterprise follows strictly the rules and regulations and standards.

This course will complement other courses on Ethics which are principles based and it will focus on the broad principles of Ethics and Frauds:

  1. Incentives to Commit Fraud;
  2. Opportunity to Commit Fraud;
  3. Rationalisation For The Fraud.

Programme Outline

We shall be looking at some of the infamous cases that have corporate failures, as well as professional ethical decisions which affect our every day work as a professional accountant.  You will get a glimpse of such cases as Pan Electric, Crazy Eddie, Just For Feet, Waste Management, Bernard L. Madoff - Madoff Investment Securities, The Baptist Foundation Of Arizona, American International Group, Inc., Worldcom. In order to have a better understanding and retention, every participant will be given notes summarising each case.

Have you thought about the expectation gaps of investors and the general public? Have you also been faced with a decision to take any dishonest truth of a client management personnel who has been kind to you?
