Creating an effective budget can be a daunting task. It is more than just a number crunching exercise. In today’s dynamic business environment, budgeting process is more robust than just putting numbers together. Other than determining how much to spend on various expenses, you must be able to defend your budget. You need to get the buy in from various stakeholders, making sure those goals are aligned to the organisation’s strategic priorities.

A meaningful budget can be a good performance measurement tool. Having a strategic goal in mind can help businesses to make effective decisions and coordinate the decisions and actions of the various departments within the organisation.  Hence, budget is not only about numbers, more importantly it involves the people responsible for the numbers.

Programme Outline

This course is designed to provide participants with the techniques and confidence to present, manage and control their budgets effectively. This course will include practical hands on session on how to build an effective budget (using Microsoft Excel)  illustrated through various case studies. Boardroom survival techniques during budget review will also be covered.

Adopt appropriate budgeting techniques for better cost control;

Microsoft Excel tips and tricks for effective preparation of budget numbers for review;

             CAPEX Selection – Different lives and costs.
             DCF Calculations
             Prepare budget numbers for review and analysis
             Managing budget updates, version selection and control
             Variance analysis and control
             Board room survival techniques

8.     Analyse and challenge the numbers and assumptions presented;
9.     Monitor performance and perform variance analysis;
10.   Some common problems and shortcomings in budgeting.
