As this class places strong emphasis on the hands-on experience, you will be working with data for the majority of the time in the class. To optimize the learning experience, it is mandatory for all participants to be equipped with a laptop, pre-installed with Anaconda installer.
- Download the Anaconda installer from www.anaconda.com/download
- If installing on Windows, make sure you check the "Add Anaconda3 to the system PATH environment variable" option (on Mac it's checked by default)
- Once installed, test opening Jupyter Notebook via Start Menu (Windows) or Terminal (Mac)
- If for some reason you cannot install Anaconda on your computer (e.g. it's a work computer with installation restrictions), we've included a few online Anaconda servers that you can choose from. If you need help navigating these online options, we can help the day of the course.
Programme Objective
This course is an introduction to Python, a popular programming language, which will be delivered in a context relevant to professional accountants. Python is a user -friendly language taught as an introductory Computer Science courses in the universities, while also being powerful and flexible enough to be used in a variety of professional settings, e.g. in data science, artificial intelligence and web development.
Programme Outline
Day 1: - Getting started with Jupyter - Python basics: Variables, Loops, Conditionals and Data Types - Introduction to data processing with the Pandas library - Using plotting libraries to present data with simple graphs - Python in the real world: Compiling tweets, and cracking a zip file |
Day 2: - Using data tools in Python for financial analysis - Reading from public stock ticker APIs, manipulating and presenting stock data - Excel vs Python, when to use each, and how to complement one another - Working with Excel files and Google Sheets - Python in the real world: sorting out Excel data, reading weather data using APIs |
Pre-requisites
Please take note of the following admission requirements:
- Trainings will be conducted on Zoom platform, thus video camera and microphone are compulsory
- Mandatory for video camera to be turned on throughout the course
- Display your official name (as per NRIC) in Zoom, to facilitate attendance taking
Training Methodology
A hands-on and highly participative learning course conducted in a computer lab. Participants will be given opportunities to perform simple coding using Python and create simple charts from data sets.

1] NTUC Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)
UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme) is an individual skills upgrading account for NTUC members.
NTUC members enjoy 50% *unfunded course fee support for up to $250 each year when you sign up for courses supported under UTAP. NTUC members aged 40 and above can enjoy higher funding support up to $500 per individual each year, capped at 50% of unfunded course fees, for courses attended between 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2022. *This excludes miscellaneous fees such as GST and registration fee etc.
This course is approved for UTAP support for intakes conducted between 01 April 2021 – 31 March 2022.
As UTAP is given on calendar year basis, and calculated based on year of training taken, it cannot be accumulated.
- Maintained paid-up NTUC membership before course, throughout course duration and at the point of claim and;
- Course by training provider must be supported under UTAP and training must commence within the supported period and;
- Unfunded course fee must not be fully sponsored by company or other types of funding
- Unfunded course fee must be S$20.00 and above, and;
- Member must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance for each application and sat for all prescribed examination(s), if any and;
- UTAP application must be made within 6 months after course ends.
