Computer spreadsheet software has long helped organizations to increase their productivity in producing information. Embedded in the spreadsheet are much less-used capabilities, including open database connectivity (ODBC), data table pivot and drill-down technologies, object-linking and embedding (OLE), as well as data modelling tools which provide much promise for even greater productivity increases. With increasing pressures toward greater efficiencies in data extraction and analysis and the need for more effective computer-based reporting of results, organizational practitioners need to understand the comparative functionality of various tools. A significant part of Excel work is conducted through queries on relational databases. A foundational knowledge on SQL would provide the ability to retrieve information from any relational database and helps to understand the graphical query interfaces found in many relational databases such as MS-SQL, MySQL, Oracle Database, IBM Db2, MS-Access, etc. Understanding SQL will ultimately help the practitioner to be able to craft complex queries to retrieve, analyze and report the results for decision-making.
