Programme Objective
To explore issues related to ethical dilemmas in the fields of business and finance.
Programme Outline
Ethics – An Overview
Motivations and motives of persons - Maslow's hierachy of needs, sociobiology
Employee duties - fidelity, fiduciary duties (for managers and directors), ethical requirements, corruption, lawsuits against fiduciaries
Employment - fair employment practices, Employment laws and rules, issues in employment - discrimination against minorities based on race, etc; constructive dismissal, role of TAFEP
Financial ethics - problem businesses (tobacco, gambling, alcohol, firearms, blood diamonds), investment manager's duties, ethical investment principles, Islamic finance (main rules regarding interest, gambling and alcohol)
Banking ethics - loans to problems businesses, Ashley Paige as a bank customer, subprime lending
Sales issues - improper sales techniques, evil customers (eg IBM sales to Hitler's Germany)
Procurement problems - purchasing from immoral suppliers (issues of child labour, unsafe working conditions, slavery, etc), discussion (Rana Plaza case)
Relationship between law and ethics - criminal law issues, law of negligence (including the recent lawsuit against SMRT by a Thai teen), what is a life worth?
Pre-requisites
Please take note of the following admission requirements:
- Trainings will be conducted on Zoom platform, thus video camera and microphone are compulsory
- Mandatory for video camera to be turned on throughout the course
- Display your official name (as per NRIC) in Zoom, to facilitate attendance taking
