Programme Objective

Have you ever tried to explain your data to stakeholders who do not appreciate your insights? Are you impressed with dashboards that can help users to answer their questions and facilitate data discovery? The answer to these lies in how you visualise your data. Data visualisation is not simply creating charts. It encompasses a series of planning and data-related activities to help you present your insights effectively.

In this hands-on course, you will learn all the basic skills and techniques to design and create effective and aesthetically pleasing data visualisations using Tableau to help you become more productive at work, be it for reporting or analyses purposes. We will also cover the art of creating interactive dashboards and touch briefly on infographics and to learn practical knowledge to improve your communication and presentation skills.

This course covers four learning units:

 

  • LU1: Plan and Design
    • Analyse business problem and audience when to establish objectives for data storytelling and visualisation
    • Select appropriate visualisation techniques and information displays to convey data and findings

 

  • LU2: Develop and Troubleshoot
    • Describe the differences among different data types and table structures
    • Undertake simple data preparation steps to cleanse data for analytics and visualisation
    • Develop interactive graphics, visuals and other technical features into the data visualisation
    • Organise and analyse data to present trends and correlations via interactive dashboard

 

  • LU3: Present and Communicate
    • Adopt visual cues to convey key meaning and insights effectively 
    • Describe data trends and patterns in the narrative format or management commentary to cater to different groups of audience and scenario

 

  • LU4: Feedback and Improve
    • Demonstrate an understanding of automation and workflow to streamline data preparation steps to design a real-time dashboard
    • Appreciate the importance of obtaining timely feedback from audience to update the objectives of data visualisation and refine the presentation elements
    • Discuss key change management concepts and develop plans to obtain buy-in from stakeholders

Programme Outline

In the first LU, Plan and Design, we will cover requirements gathering, selecting appropriate visualisation techniques to suit the needs of the audience.

The second LU, Develop and Troubleshoot, will cover basic data types and preparation, organise and analyse data to present trends and correlations and create dashboard.

The third LU, Present and Communicate, will cover intermediate techniques to create more complex visualisation that can support greater business needs.

In the last LU, Feedback and Improve, we will cover change management to manage feedback and development cycles, and discuss means to adopt automation and what is needed to create a self-updating dashboard.

Training Methodology

This course uses a mixture of presentation, group discussion and hands-on exercises. A significant portion of class time will be dedicated to hands-on session to ensure participants can create the visualisation back at work.

Willy is a Chartered Accountant and member of the ISCA Young Professional Advisory Committee (YPAC). He graduated from SMU School of Accountancy and worked in Singapore and London. He has worked on both small and large scaled enterprise change projects and specialises in implementation of enterprise transformation, business process re-engineering; and data analytics & visualisation solutions.
 
He has also worked with Prof Foo to develop and teach data analytics classes in SMU and has also conducted research work to support the publication of a Board level guidance document on the usage of discretionary grants. He holds multiple management, accounting and IT/Agile related certification, including Certified Internal Auditor, Investment Management Certificate (UK), ITIL, Certified Scrum Master, Certified Scaled Agilist and CMMI (Associate) and others.
 
Outside of work, he volunteers with Food from the Heart and CDAC.
