Effective Speaking: The Psychology of Storytelling for CAs

Humans are wired for stories. From ancient cave paintings to modern-day movies, we’ve always been drawn to narratives. By understanding this psychology, chartered accountants can craft presentations that captivate and inform. By mastering the art of narrating numbers, finance professionals can elevate their presentations, making them not just informative, but also engaging and memorable. In doing so, they not only uphold the integrity of their data, but also create a lasting impact on their audience.

The CFO of the Future?

The “VUCA” world appears to be headed toward an unprecedented era of turbulence and polycrisis. The post-WWII liberal, rule-based world order, characterised by globalisation and benign interdependence - that has served as the bedrock for peace and prosperity, especially in Singapore and Asia - appears to be under threat.

We are witnessing the extraordinary confluence of heightened geopolitical tensions/conflicts; intensifying Great Power contestation; a re-ordering of global supply chains away from traditional metrics of profitability and efficiency, toward a post-pandemic emphasis on security, “de-risking” and resilience; stubborn inflation; slowing growth; as well as an abrupt emergence or “normalisation”, from a decade of ultra-low interest rates post-GFC, following the great “QE” experiment. Together, these forces are culminating into what President Tharman described as the “perfect, long storm”.

Accountants play an essential role in society today, as stewards of capital and “corporate doctors”: protecting, rehabilitating and creating value; fostering trust, allocating capital; and in so doing safeguarding livelihoods and combating climate change.

Against this backdrop, stakeholders’ expectations of the modern-day CFO, already highly demanding and multi-faceted as it is today, can only heighten and intensify, on an accelerated pace, into the future.

We will explore what different stakeholders expect of the “CFO of the Future”, the skillsets and attributes we need to acquire/possess/sharpen, to succeed in this exacting role, or to continue to do so. We will also look at the career pathways and strategies CFO-aspirants can consider in their career journeys today, amid a workplace where traditional “ladder” career paths give way to “lattice” and “emergent” models.
