IT095 : Optimise Accounting Efficiency with VBA, ChatGPT, and Copilot

Participants are required to bring along their laptops with Excel installed (preferably Office 365—app version, at least Excel 2013).

This comprehensive course is designed to empower finance professionals to use ChatGPT and Copilot effectively to generate VBA code to automate accounting and finance process. By the end of this program, participants will achieve the following objectives:

  1. Understand the potential of ChatGPT and Copilot: Explore the potential of these tools for various accounting and finance use cases, including identifying fraud, analyzing financial statements, performing analytics, generating PowerPoint presentations, creating VBA code, read PDFs and many more 
  2. Learn Prompt Engineering: Learn how to prompt effectively to generate code. 
  3. Learn VBA Fundamentals: Understand how to copy and paste code, troubleshoot with ChatGPT, and read basic code to confidently automate tasks and processes
  4. Hands-On Accounting Applications: Work on real-life accounting use cases to learn how to build macros to automate accounting processes. 

By the end of this program, you will possess the ability to read and understand code, effectively prompt for VBA code generation, copy and execute it, and proficiently automate financial processes

Introduction to VBA, ChatGPT and Copilot

  • Overview of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), ChatGPT and Copilot
  • Understanding the benefits and potential these tools in the accounting and finance domain
  • Discuss how these tools can enhance and changing existing job roles 
  • Show practical use cases for these tools for these different job roles

Hands-on Session: Using ChatGPT and Copilot to generate code

  • Set up of Chat GPT account
  • Step-by-step guidance on interacting with ChatGPT and Copilot
  • Set up to keep information confidential for PDPA purposes 
  • Providing pre-built prompts for different use cases to initiate conversations with ChatGPT and Copilot
  • Exploring how to structure queries to maximize the effectiveness of ChatGPT in generating accurate responses
  • Introduction to prompt engineering
  • Learn to generate and run code to automate accounting and finance processes.    

Hands-on Session: Building VBA macros

  •  VBA Fundamentals
  • Setting Up VBA Environment in Excel
  • Writing VBA Macros with ChatGPT and Copilot Assistance
    • Automate various common accounting tasks in excel such as: 
    • Sales calculations  
    • Check for approvals against approval matrix
    • Split data into different listings for approval 
    • Compiling sales data from various sheets into Masterfile for analysis 
    • Compiling sales data from various excel files into Masterfile for analysis  
  • Debugging and Refining ChatGPT and Copilot Generated Code

Developing a Digital Transformation Plan for your company

  • Identify potential use cases and create a roadmap for digital transformation 
  • Exploring the steps and considerations for implementing digital solutions within an organization
  • Understanding the importance of change management in implementing digital transformation
  • Discussing strategies to address challenges, overcome resistance, and ensure successful adoption of such technology

Daryl Aw is the founder and Managing Director of Skybots Pte Ltd in Singapore. Skybots provides automation solutions for accounting, tax, audit, corporate secretarial, finance and sustainability processes, helping companies in their digital transformation journey. These solutions involve using Robotics Procession Automation (RPA), data analytics and Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT to automate tedious and repetitive processes for companies to successfully achieve significant productivity gains. He was previously a lecturer in Singapore Polytechnic leading the accounting faculty in RPA and Sustainability projects. He was the lead in Strategic Partnerships leading collaborations with the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC), the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants
(ISCA) and the National Council of Social Services (NCSS).
 
He has overseen the implementation of more than 100 robots for more than 300 organisations. In 2021, he emerged as the champion at the ISCA RPA Hackathon. In 2022, he was nominated for The President’s Awards for Teachers.
 
Before joining Singapore Polytechnic, he was an auditor with EY Singapore providing auditing services to public listed and private companies in various industries. He is a Chartered Accountant with ISCA.
