14.00 CPE Hours (Category 1, Category 2, Category 3, Category 4Category 5, Others)
Live Webinar

This class places strong emphasis on hands-on participation. To optimize the virtual learning experience, it is mandatory for all participants to be equipped with a laptop/desktop connected to stable internet access. The use of dual monitors is encouraged as you will be using 2 applications concurrently. The use of the Chrome browser is also preferred for optimal performance.

Participants will use the following software during the live webinar. Please install the software before the live webinar.

Introduction

Data Exploration allows accountants to see behind the numbers and uncover trends, patterns and relationships that would otherwise remain hidden. Exploring data visualisation is essential when it comes to improving workflows, making better decisions, and communicating results to clients and colleagues. There are now numerous tools that allow accountants to explore and visualise data. While there is no right or wrong in data visualisation, people often forget to pay attention to a proper design concept when creating compelling visualisation.

Design is the process of creating something of value in visualisations. The practical design considers the visualisations’ form/appeal and function. Design in data visualisation, for example, makes charts and tables more understandable. The design process in data visualisation adds value by focusing on what users want, creating a compelling and convincing story and need to make data-driven decisions. By focusing on the end audience at every stage of the process, design processes lead to better data exploration, visualisations, and storytelling.

This workshop will equip participants with the right design-thinking skills to explore and visualise data. Participants will learn the Five Design Sheet (FDS) method for formalizing sketches and low-fidelity prototypes so they can explore their ideas without worrying about the technical aspects. Participants will experience hands-on work on sketching the visualization with the FDS method using whiteboard tool (MIRO). Once they understand this design method, participants will be guided to explore and visualise data using R. Participants will use R studio and well-known R packages for data visualisation, like, ggplot2 and plotly.

The objective of this course is to help participants to understand visualisation design and implement the design using a data visualisation tool (R and its data visualization packages, e.g., ggplot2 and plotly)
