BM013 : Business Mandarin - Basic English-Chinese Financial Translation

Programme Objective

The seminar aims to provide the participants some basic concepts, understanding, principles, purposes and standards of the English-Chinese translation (also known as ‘from English translated to Chinese’).  Focus is placed on the translation approaches and techniques in order to enhance the participants the use of the languages and meeting the translation requirements.  Sources of materials obtained from different texts and documents from various fields so that participants can have a good understanding in basic translation.  Participants will learn how to analyse short English financial texts and use the basic techniques acquired to translate them into Chinese.  Comparison of different translations will be used to demonstrate the understanding of techniques.  Common errors and issues in translation from English into Chinese are analysed and explained.  Comparative study of English and Chinese will also be introduced in this seminar.  Participants will be made aware of the operational and documentary conventions and learn how to be more effectively deal with jargons, terminologies and figures.

At the end of the seminar, participants will demonstrate competence in translating financial documents. Participants will have gained sufficient knowledge and techniques in translating English texts with a moderate level of difficulty into Chinese.

 

Translation Talent Development Scheme (TTDS)
 
Translation Talent Development Scheme (TTDS) is a co-sponsorship grant that supports full-time Singaporean translation and interpretation practitioners (including freelancers) with at least three years of relevant professional experience to further their capabilities and attain mastery of their skills.  TTDS is open for application from 1 April to 14 June 2019 (both dates inclusive). Interested applicants may obtain more details and download the application form from the Ministry of Communications and Information’s website at https://www.mci.gov.sg/ttds.

An intermediate level seminar intended for Accounting and Finance professionals who can read and write basic Chinese and interested to learn some basic English-Chinese translation skills.  It will be good if participants have taken BM009 or equipped with some knowledge of how the Chinese Accounting Vocabulary are being formulated.

Mr. Alan Ng has a Master degree in Finance from the National University of Ireland and Master of Art in Chinese Language & Literature from the Beijing Normal University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants UK and a Chartered Accountant of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA).

Mr. Alan Ng has more than seventeen years of lecturing experience. He has taught various accounting and finance subjects in the diploma and degree level. Being committed and patient, it is not surprising that he has helped many weak students improve on their grades. It should be highlighted that Mr Alan Ng has been teaching the UOL programme since 1999 and that he has produced many first class honours students over the years.
