Sun Zi created this reflective, powerful work of strategic thinking. Although just 6000 Chinese characters over 13 chapters, the concepts embedded are so wide ranging. Almost every aspect of competitive strategy in current Western texts is prescribed. For this reason, many CEOs find delight in reading Art of War by Sun Zi. Through a novel training approach (utilizing streaming music) participants are introduced to a flow of the concepts. Also very powerful visual imagery (by one of Asia’s top photographer, Steven Yee) participants gain an immediate, often intuitive insights into the mind of Sun Zi. The methodology was perfected through Professor Dr FOO Check Teck founding the Mind of Sun Zi’s module at NTU, Singapore.

So deeply did Sun Zi immerse himself that every facet of strategy is dealt with: miraculously some more relevant today than ever before!

According to Professor Ma Jun from China, Sun Zi is a Qi Ren: roughly translated as a person of extraordinary talent. That Art of War, a 2,500 years old text is even today widely quoted across military, business, sports, politics, finance, accounting etc. is testimony to his rare abilities. This programme highlights aspects of the Art of War that are especially relevant to auditors and accountants. For example, how Sun Zi was already ahead of others in thinking of systems: the value in M&A of acquiring a corporation and keeping intact the divisions, departments and teams. Most amazingly, Sun Zi prescribed how corporate performances and outcomes are but functions of insights from critical information processing. Through Sun Zi too, auditors and accountants will grasp how timing is so essential for success.

These were developed whilst he was a NTU professor founding the world’s first Mind of Sun Tzu module for university students. Leading corporations had organized in-house programmes to learn Art of War through this unique approach.

Following a holistic overview of concepts of Art of War by Sun Tzu, participants will then be involved in a simple, yet highly illustrative strategic thinking process. It is presented as a mind game and was utilized as part of a German multinational Global Strategy Workshop for senior managerial staff including directors. The purpose of this session is to enable participants to practice the concepts of the art of war in a real, warring, battleground environment. Through this exercise, participants learn to better appreciate the in-depth, art of war thinking.

Professor Dr FOO Check Teck emphasizes in-situ strategic thinking. Top generals like Mao Zedong or Napoleon are able to formulate effective on-the-spot, adaptive strategic responses. For this reason Sun Zi prescribed that during wars, Generals be empowered to make battleground decisions. Kings are not to intervene. Similarly, in today’s rapidly changing markets, managers ought to make fast decisions. From this experimental training, perhaps one “best Art of War” participant may emerge. Following the completion of the game, Professor Dr FOO Check Teck will in a deserving case, award the winning participant with a prize! (Original, first print edition of the book, Organizing Strategy).

1615-1700 Module 4

In this final session, Professor Dr FOO Check Teck will speak on the “Accounting Mind of Sun Zi”. He had delivered this as a theme at a major international accounting conference for accountants.
