Programme Objective
The threat of cyber attacks is a global priority and concern. Cybersecurity breaches are occurring with higher frequency and intensity, causing crippling devastation for businesses and organisations alike. The need for qualified information security professionals is therefore made even more crucial to minimise and eradicate this ominous issue.

Secure Use of IT sets out concepts relating to the secure use of ICT in daily life and skills used to maintain a secure network connection, use the Internet safely and securely, and manage data and information appropriately.
 

Programme Outline

Upon completion of this 2-day course, participants will:

  • Understand the importance of keeping information and data secure, and identify common data/privacy protection, retention and control principles.
  • Recognise threats to personal security from identity theft and potential threats to data from using cloud computing.
  • Be able to use passwords and encryption to secure files and data.
  • Understand the threat of malware and be able to protect a computer, device or network from malware and address malware attacks.
  • Recognise common network and wireless security types and be able to use personal firewalls and personal hotspots.
  • Protect a computer or device from unauthorised access and be able to safely manage and update passwords.
  • Use appropriate web browser settings and understand how to authenticate websites and browse the web securely.
  • Understand communication security issues that can arise from using e-mail, social networks, voice over Internet protocol, instant messaging and mobile devices.
  • Back up and restore data to local and cloud storage locations and delete and dispose of data and devices securely.
Training Methodology

Competency-based training, with a combination of instructional methods of lectures, discussions and assessments.

Assessment

Online assessments (close book) on both days.

All Singaporeans aged 25 and above will receive an opening credit of S$500 from January 2016. The SkillsFuture credit will not expire and the government will provide periodic top-ups. You may accumulate your credit and use your credit to pay for or offset skills related course fees by applying for claim(s) starting January 2016. Prior to consulting, Hsing Siong has worked for MNCs such as Hewlett Packard and Siemens, in high tech sales and marketing. He has also managed and turned around businesses to be listed on SGX before he ventured into Business Consulting. His consulting base spans across diverse industries including Agriculture; Education Services; Sheet Metal; Chemical/Plating; Trading;Packaging; EMS; Food and Food Services; Asset Protection; Homeland Security and intelligent surveillance ; Intelligent Parking Management System; Outsourcing Managed Services(Document Outsourcing; Fleet Management and Document BPO);Wireless Computing; Tablet PC/Mobile/Pen-based Computing; Employment Agencies;Energy Saving; Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Industry.

Hsing Siong also conducts IT academic courses at the Diploma and Degree levels. He has managed the development of E-Learning packages, and has worked for training service providers at senior level appointments. At ISCA, he had developed and facilitate IT courses with a focus on enhancing productivity and increasing automation for Accounting Professionals.

A tthe technical level, he was involved in large scale software projects using Stream programming and was a first mover to harness the power of client server technology during its day of infancy. He also oversaw various software projects that included development of ERP and other web-based application (using JavaScript, Groovy, Grails, AJAX, JQuery etc) that integrate several  functions for various Service Industries.

Hsing Siong holds a Master in Mass Communications from Wee Kim Wee School of Communication; an MBA in Banking and Finance from Nanyang Business School, NTU; and a M.Sc. (Computer Science) and a B. Sc. (Computer Science) from School of Computing, NUS. In addition, he was also awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Telecommunication Software (Data Communication and Networking) from ICIS (started as a collaboration between AT&T Bell Labs and NCB, now a school in NTU);Specialist Diploma in Instruction Design (E-Learning) from NIE, NTU and a Diploma in Marketing from CIM, UK.
