Participants are required to bring along their laptops with Excel installed (preferably Office 365—app version, at least Excel 2013).

This practical Excel course, led by an accountant, is specifically designed for accountants who want to improve their Excel skills and learn how to apply them to their daily work. The course will cover a range of Excel functions and best practices, including preparation of financial statements, balance sheet schedules, etc., tailored to the needs of accounting professionals.

Participants will learn how to use Excel to streamline their daily tasks, reduce manual efforts, and minimize errors. The course will include practical exercises and case studies that are relevant to accounting work, providing participants with the opportunity to apply their Excel skills to real-world situations.

By the end of the course, participants will have a solid foundation in Excel and will be able to apply it more effectively and efficiently to their daily work. The trainer’s experience as accountant ensures that the course content is relevant, practical, and geared towards the unique needs of accountants.

Define scope of use:

  • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of Excel and applicability of Excel in accounting scenarios

Design Excel workbooks for repeated use:

  • Explore the design approach
  • Workbook structure
  • Formatting
  • Referencing
  • Good practices–do’s and don’ts
  • Common pitfalls
  • How to avoid laggy spreadsheets
  • Data validation and strategies to ensure data accuracy and consistency

Hands-on Practice Cases:

  • Schedules for financial instruments at amortised cost (determine implicit rate, present value, amortisation schedule, segregating current and non-current)
  • Prepare financial statements / management accounts
  • Balance sheet schedules – open items & movements

Lecture style, with computer hands-on exercises

1] NTUC Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP)

NTUC members enjoy 50% *unfunded course fee support for up to $250 each year when you sign up for courses supported under UTAP. NTUC members aged 40 and above can enjoy higher funding support up to $500 per individual each year, capped at 50% of unfunded course fees, for courses attended between 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2025.

*Unfunded course fee refers to the balance course fee payable after applicable government subsidies. This excludes material fees, registration fees, misc. fees etc.

This course is approved for UTAP support for intakes conducted between 03 April 2024 – 31 March 2025.

As UTAP is given on calendar year basis, and calculated based on year of training taken, it cannot be accumulated.

  • Maintained paid-up NTUC membership before course, throughout course duration and at the point of claim and;
  • Course by training provider must be supported under UTAP and training must commence within the supported period and;
  • Unfunded course fee must not be fully sponsored by company or other types of funding
  • Unfunded course fee must be S$20.00 and above, and;
  • Member must achieve a minimum of 75% attendance for each application and sat for all prescribed examination(s), if any and;
  • UTAP application must be made within 6 months after course ends.

Mr Ng Xian Hui is a passionate chartered accountant with over 10 years of experience in accounting and taxation. He provides professional advice to clients on various accounting and taxation matters as well as process improvement and spreadsheet design.
 
He kick-started his career as an external auditor at a Big 4 public accounting firm, serving listed and MNC clients across diverse industries, including real estate, trading, manufacturing, F&B, hospitality, and shipping. Building on his auditing background, Xian Hui held managerial positions in the finance teams of large MNCs and SMEs, leading the full spectrum of finance functions and gaining invaluable experience in different industries, including hospitality, agriculture, and fintech start-up. His diverse experiences have enriched his expertise in handling complex accounting and tax issues.
 
In addition to his accounting proficiency, Xian Hui is also an Excel enthusiast with over 25 years of experience in using the software. He believes in the power of Excel as the best assistant for accountants and enjoys designing spreadsheets that enhance efficiency and accuracy in reporting financial information with minimal effort. Xian Hui also shares insights on how Excel can make accountants' lives easier at seminars, including seminars by Wolter Kluwer and Singapore National Employers Federation.
 
Xian Hui is a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA), as well as an ICAEW Business and Finance Professional. He also holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from the University of Melbourne and is a certified Microsoft Excel Expert.
