This course was previously known as DGT087: Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and ChatGPT Designed for Accountants by Accountants (Classroom)


It is mandatory for all participants to be equipped with a laptop (Microsoft OS, Windows 10, 4 gig ram, i5 core), pre-installed with either Microsoft Excel 2010, 2013, 2016 (full licence) or any latest version, to optimise the learning experience. If you have a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, you will need to have a locally installed Excel 365 application in your PC or laptop. Macros cannot be executed when the workbook containing them is opened in Excel online. Also, kindly note that Mac Excel version has limited Excel functionality.

This comprehensive course is designed to empower accounting and finance professionals to use robotic process automation (RPA) and visual basic for applications (VBA) to build robots that can automate accounting and finance processes.


On the completion of this course, you will be able to:

Hands-on Session: Using ChatGPT and Copilot to generate code

  • Step-by-step guidance on interacting with ChatGPT and Copilot
  • Set-up to keep information confidential for PDPA purposes
  • Provide pre-built prompts for different use cases to initiate conversations with ChatGPT and Copilot
  • Explore structure queries in order to maximise the effectiveness of ChatGPT in generating accurate responses
  • Introduction to prompt engineering
  • Generate and run code to automate accounting and finance processes.

Hands-on Session: Building VBA macros

  • Fundamentals of VBA
  • Write VBA macros with ChatGPT and Copilot Assistance
  • Utilise VBA to automate accounting processes in Excel
    • Sales calculations
    • Approval Checks against approval matrixs
    • Split data into different listings for approvals
    • Compiling sales data from various sheets into Masterfile for analysis
  • Debugging and Refining ChatGPT and Copilot generated codes

Hands-on Session: Building RPA robots

  • Fundamentals of RPA
  • Build 4 RPA robots for accounting processes
    • Data entry into accounting systems
    • Data extraction from accounting systems
    • Sending customized mass emails
    • PDF extraction

Developing a Digital Transformation Plan for your company

  • Identify potential use cases and create a roadmap for digital transformation
  • Explore the steps and considerations for implementing digital solutions within an organisation
  • Understand the importance of change management in implementing digital transformations
  • Discuss strategies to address challenges, overcome resistance, and ensure successful adoption of such technologies
