This course aims to provide SME business owners and managers with foundational project management knowledge. This will enable them to effectively manage projects through structured lifecycle phases and appropriate methodologies, such as the Waterfall, Agile, Hybrid methodologies. , The course will introduce practical tools to help SMEs to improve their project outcomes.


At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand foundational project management principles applicable to SME operations.
  • Understand the key actions required at each stage of the project lifecycle to improve project success.
  • Evaluate various project management methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, Hybrid)
  • Apply   project management tools to manage projects efficiently.

Introduction to Project Management for SMEs

  • Define what constitutes a "project" in the SME context.
  • Identify why structured project management is valuable for SMEs.
  • Recognise the key roles and responsibilities within SME projects.The SME Project Lifecycle
  • Identify the five key phases of a typical SME project lifecycle.
  • Explain essential SME-specific actions required at each lifecycle phase.
  • Understand common pitfalls at each phase and how to avoid them.
  • Activity: Lifecycle Mapping Exercise


Selecting the Right Methodology for your business

  • Compare common project management methodologies: Waterfall, Agile, Hybrid.
  • Determine the most appropriate methodology for common SME project scenarios.
  • Evaluate pros and cons of each methodology.


Practical Project Management Tools for SMEs

  • Select and apply practical project management tools suitable for SMEs.
  • Use simple templates and checklists to initiate, plan, monitor, and close projects effectively.
  • Identify common metrics which SMEs can use to track to ensure project success.
